Trata-se de uma peça instrumental sinfônica com um dos solos de guitarra mais intensos do álbum, apesar de sua curta duração. Já "Taking You Down" foi composta em homenagem a um amigo problemático de Hackett na escola, entregando uma das guitarras mais ferozes do disco, complementada pelos vocais de Nad Sylvan e um saxofone agressivo.

The official video for "People of the Smoke" is an evocative tribute to the foggy London of the time, captured by Paul Gosling. "These Passing Clouds" is the first of four tracks under two minutes long. It is a symphonic instrumental piece featuring one of the album's most intense guitar solos despite its short duration. Meanwhile, "Taking You Down" was composed in homage to a troubled friend of Hackett's in school, delivering one of the fiercest guitars on the album, complemented by Nad Sylvan's vocals and aggressive saxophone.

"Found and Lost" is an intimate track that recalls Hackett's first love, marked by disillusionments and diverging paths. The melancholy of the song is reinforced by the guitarist's personal vocal delivery. Next, "Enter the Ring" revisits memories of fame in the 1970s with Genesis, being one of the best tracks on the album, with its guitar solos, floating flutes, and circus-like atmosphere. "Into the Nightwhale" deals with overcoming personal demons with a melody reminiscent of Peter Gabriel's "Darkness" and vocals that evoke David Gilmour. Finally, "Wherever You Are" is a love declaration to Hackett's wife, while "White Dove" closes the album with a melancholic and romantic instrumental piece.

Even though it sounds more like a classic progressive rock album, The Circus and the Nightwhale develops in a diverse and engaging way. The album proves that even after so many years, Steve Hackett remains a relevant and inspiring musician.
