Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn (1975)

Ommadawn is an extremely special album that synthesizes and surpasses everything Mike Oldfield learned in his two previous works. Crafted with dramatic precision, deeply moving, and perfectly executed, the album is a true masterpiece. I remember feeling a certain embarrassment for once referring to Oldfield merely as "the guy from the Exorcist music," as if his work was limited to that. How naive of me—or perhaps it was blasphemy? I'm not sure. What I do know is that over the years, I not only began to listen to his music but also studied it deeply.

It’s almost hard to believe that Ommadawn was recorded in 1975. The production is incredibly clean, and the concept behind the album is revolutionary in the way it blends pop, classical, progressive, and ethnic music, utilizing a multitude of instruments that result in superb music. When I use the term "revolutionary," it may seem like an exaggeration to some, but there’s no denying that it is, at the very least, a brave work. Although the idea of a single track occupying each side of the record wasn't unprecedented, Oldfield has never been as precise and impactful as he is here.

“Ommadawn Part 1” begins with a hypnotic, mysterious, and relaxing tone, where bass, guitar, koto, and deep organ intertwine softly with a restrained choir. The atmosphere created is perfect for meditation. The music progresses with absolute perfection in terms of rhythm, structure, and musicianship until, with the massive sound of a gong, the enigmatic melody comes to life. The influence of Baroque music (Bach and Vivaldi) is evident, and while Oldfield has already shown that he doesn’t need other musicians to create great albums, the inclusion of more members here gave his compositions a new and improved texture. Around the middle of the track, it seems to "restart" with a new gentle current, evoking a sense of serenity and vibrating with a new twist that changes the main theme. The guitar that enters at this moment is stunning, brimming with energy and bringing an uplifting sensation to the listener. African percussion leads the music toward an ending full of uncertainties, only for us to be embraced once more by the initial theme with bass beats, desperate choirs, guitar, and tubular bells. An incredible track that alone would justify the album, but there’s still more.

“Ommadawn Part 2” is no less brilliant, though many consider it slightly inferior to the first part. The beginning is wonderful, with electric guitars vibrating in unison, creating a feeling of unfathomable weight. The music is gently cut by flutes, which make it slowly fade away until acoustic guitars begin to wander freely. One of the most beautiful bagpipe performances I've ever heard strengthens the track with long, lazy notes before steering it into a more melancholic path, where acoustic guitar and flute establish a more introspective atmosphere. Once again, energetic African drums give rhythm to the music, serving as the foundation for an excellent guitar solo. After a few seconds of silence, a charming guitar melody emerges, accompanied by Oldfield’s fragile voice singing the first verses of “On Horseback” (a track included at the end of "Ommadawn Part 2"), where he talks about simple everyday things he enjoys doing, like drinking beer, eating cheese, feeling the breeze, or riding a horse. This part has an almost childlike sentiment, especially due to the children's choir leading the final chorus. Although the ending is less impactful than the rest of the album, the passion with which Oldfield handles the instruments remains impressive.

Ommadawn is a deep and powerful album. If you’re looking for symphonic, melodic progressive music with a peaceful and emotional atmosphere, there’s no other album I’d recommend before this one. Ommadawn goes beyond being just a masterpiece on the shelf; over time, it may become a true member of the family, such is the interaction and connection it exerts on the listener's soul. It is the pinnacle of Mike Oldfield's genius.

Mike Oldfield - Hergest Ridge (1974)

The overwhelming success of Tubular Bells, Mike Oldfield's debut album, is widely recognized, far exceeding all expectations. However, this unexpected triumph brought with it a crushing weight, leading the young musician to seek refuge in an isolated country house on the border between Wales and England, nestled in the slopes of the magnificent Hergest Ridge. This inspiring landscape not only provided Mike with the isolation he so desired but also lent its name to his second album. I believe that, emotionally unprepared to deal with the intense demands of his growing fame, relentless interviews, and the many pressures that beset him, Oldfield found seclusion to be the only way to protect himself and preserve his sanity while composing his next work.

Free from external pressures and in contact only with guest musicians, Oldfield dedicated himself entirely to the creative process. I have a strong suspicion that he spent many hours wandering through the beautiful coastal landscapes, transposing his impressions into music masterfully. After all, it's not difficult for anyone listening to Hergest Ridge to close their eyes and feel transported to distant mountains, visualize a beautiful sunset, or follow the gentle movement of clouds in the sky. Oldfield's music has this ability to evoke images and emotions with a unique intensity.

From the first time I listened to the album, I was overwhelmed by an instant and profound passion. Nothing better describes my feeling upon encountering this work than the overwhelming impact it had on me. I quickly realized the grandeur and importance of what I was hearing, to the point of catching myself whistling its melodies for weeks on end.

Hergest Ridge Part 1 begins abruptly, with a choir supported by wind instruments that create an almost magical sound, introducing the listener to Oldfield's inner world. Subtle percussion marks the start of the main melody, which emerges with an optimistic force and is explored with an incomparable delicacy—one of the most distinctive marks of Mike's career. Waves of brass and acoustic guitars float harmoniously, creating an atmosphere of solitude and clarity that is simply hypnotic. Midway through the piece, the music plunges into a pulsating bass riff and synthesizers that convey a sense of mystery and curiosity, driving the listener to a breathtaking emotional climax. Dreamy bells and organs, accompanied by an uplifting choir, lead the piece to an almost spiritual conclusion, leaving the listener with a sense of farewell.

Hergest Ridge Part 2 starts delicately and melancholically. The guitars, initially soft, gain strength and guide the listener through a musical journey of overcoming, accentuated by the choir's imposing presence. As in the first part, an atmosphere of uncertainty pervades the music, with the main theme returning in a solitary organ before the piece delves into darker territories, accompanied by organ and flute work that evokes a sense of insecurity. Unexpectedly, the music explodes into a frenzy known to Oldfield's fans as “the Hergest Ridge storm”—a prolonged battle of distorted guitars and layers of fuzz that express frustration and stress, yet maintain a firm control, suggesting that even in chaos, there is order. As the storm reaches its peak, the music returns to a serene state, with acoustic guitars, strings, and choir, concluding the work introspectively and contemplatively, like a summary of what has been experienced and a reflection on the future.

Hergest Ridge is one of Mike Oldfield's most remarkable achievements. Filled with emotion, unique textures, brilliant instrumentation, and exceptional performances, the album goes beyond mere listening—it is an experience to be felt and understood. Oldfield’s ability to awaken the listener’s interpretative sense, even in instrumental compositions, is impressive, reaffirming that his music transcends sound, reaching a level of depth that few artists manage to achieve.

Mike Oldfield - Return To Ommadawn (2017)

How many artists, 42 years after releasing their grandest work, would have the courage to literally return to it? Mike Oldfield not only revisits Ommadawn, but embarks on a new musical journey full of risks, showcasing refined and exceptionally tasteful music. Return to Ommadawn, divided into two parts of over 20 minutes each, does not disappoint compared to the most inspired moments of his extensive discography.

Although Mike Oldfield has released good albums over the years, I must admit that I had long been waiting for something that brought the musical and emotional weight found in Return to Ommadawn. Something that could easily be placed among his best albums. This work is a return to predominantly acoustic instruments, all played by Oldfield, which convey an incredible pastoral and Celtic feel combined with intense and sentimental progressive music. While there are some reminiscences of past songs, it is undeniable that it is also something new, with its own atmosphere.

In "Return to Ommadawn Pt 1", there is a kind of return to the feeling of his 70s music. The music, sublime and natural, captivates the listener in a dreamlike sensation. The impression of facing a continuation is truly amazing, from the flutes to the voices in the middle of the track. The great diversity of instruments, all played by a single mind, is organized precisely, resulting in a beauty rarely seen in his career. Just for this part alone, I would be satisfied with the album, as it brings back the best of Mike Oldfield’s past and blends it with some of his best contemporary ideas in many years.

"Return to Ommadawn Pt 2" manages to be even more beautiful. The track starts with magnificent acoustic guitar work, complemented by a light background choir and a piano that conveys a surreal serenity. Throughout its length, the track presents a vivid and positive journey, with a melancholic yet hopeful joy. The balanced refinement between the instruments and the grace in the transitions between parts of the composition envelops the listener from the first to the last second, creating a unique and hypnotizing sound.

After the tragic loss of his son in 2015, Mike Oldfield seems to have found happiness again through Return to Ommadawn. As the album’s title implies, it is not a new work or aimed at a different audience, but a piece primarily made for those who are well-acquainted with his musical world, taking them to a well-known environment. Return to Ommadawn is proof that Oldfield still possesses the magic and mastery that made him renowned, delivering an album that is both nostalgic and innovative, full of emotional and musical depth.
