Turbulence é uma banda de metal progressivo criada em 2003 em, Beirute, Líbano. A banda surgiu durante um período intenso e de efervescência cultural e social na região. São influenciados por uma ampla gama de estilos musicais, que vão desde bandas de metal progressivo como Dream Theater, Opeth, Haken, Leprous e Shadow Gallery até elementos da rica tradição musical árabe. Suas letras, muitas vezes, refletem as complexidades da vida no Oriente Médio, abordando questões como identidade, conflito, esperança e resiliência. Essa combinação de elementos líricos profundos e música complexa e emotiva ressoou com uma ampla gama de ouvintes, tanto na região quanto internacionalmente.

Uma das principais características da banda é a sua habilidade de incorporar em seu som, instrumentos tradicionais árabes, como, por exemplo, o oud e o kanun. Esses instrumentos adicionam uma textura única às suas composições, criando um som que é ao mesmo tempo familiar e singular. A fusão desses elementos tradicionais com o poder e a técnica do metal progressivo criam uma identidade sonora que é instantaneamente reconhecível.

Na condição de uma banda de metal no Oriente Médio, os desafios enfrentados são significativos e multifacetados, tais como, restrições culturais e sociais, tendo em vista que em muitos países do Oriente Médio o metal pode ser visto com desconfiança pelas autoridades e por partes da sociedade, escassez de espaços para shows já que a maioria dos locais são relutantes em hospedar eventos de música pesada, pressões externas, como críticas de conservadores ou fundamentalistas religiosos que veem o metal como uma influência negativa. Porém, apesar disso tudo, a capacidade da banda em se adaptar e superar as adversidades acaba sendo algo inspirador.

Três anos após, Frontal, seu disco anterior - e que considero o melhor disco de metal progressivo de 2021 - a banda retorna ao cenário por meio de Binary Dream, seu terceiro álbum. A incorporação de riffs pesados dá ao álbum uma agressividade acentuada, enquanto as complexidades rítmicas que se entrelaçam ao longo das faixas exigem uma boa atenção do ouvinte para que sejam apreciadas de forma plena. A mistura de faixas vocais e instrumentais (3 das 9), mostra uma clara intenção de equilibrar expressividade lírica com demonstrações de virtuosismo instrumental. Isso permite que o disco capture uma gama mais ampla de emoções e temas, refletindo os contrastes entre introspecção e explosão, além de ordem e caos.

O disco é um registro conceitual que explora temas futuristas e reflexões éticas através da história de um robô que dá nome ao disco e que está envolvido em um experimento. A história é um reflexo artístico das preocupações contemporâneas sobre a ascensão das tecnologias de inteligência artificial e seus potenciais impactos na sociedade. Ao escolher um robô como protagonista, a banda mergulha no coração das questões éticas que cercam a inteligência artificial: o que significa ser "consciente", a natureza da autonomia e o potencial para máquinas transcenderem seus parâmetros de programação originais.

Considero quatro os grandes destaques do disco - o que não quer dizer que as outras cinco também não tenham os seus méritos. "Theta" possui vocais que mesclam o metal e o hard rock, riffs poderosos e solo adequado de guitarra, uma seção rítmica robusta e teclado que permeia a peça dando uma atmosfera envolvente. Uma faixa que não apenas se destaca como uma música poderosa dentro do álbum, mas também exemplifica a habilidade da banda em tecer complexidade técnica com expressão emocional, criando uma peça que é tanto impactante quanto muito bem construída.

"Manifestations" é uma faixa instrumental que embora obviamente não contenha letras, expressa muito através de uma exibição técnica que serve como uma verdadeira amostra do metal progressivo em sua forma mais pura, demonstrando a capacidade da banda de dominar e manipular complexidades técnicas para tecer uma narrativa sonora rica e envolvente. Fãs de Dream Theater certamente se sentirão familiarizados ao ouvir esta música. "Manifestation" é erguida sobre um alicerce de habilidades instrumentais excepcionais. Cada integrante traz uma contribuição única, tecendo juntos um mosaico sonoro que é ao mesmo tempo complexo e unificado.

"Binary Dream" é o épico do disco com os seus mais de 14 minutos. Ela possui tudo que podemos esperar de um clássico exemplo de metal progressivo. Desde o início, cativa o ouvinte com uma construção elaborada que gradualmente se desenrola gerando tensão na medida em que avança. Os vocais são impactantes, os riffs de guitarra são poderosos e intrincados, alternando entre momentos de intensidade pura e reflexão contemplativa, enquanto que a seção rítmica fornece uma base sólida e dinâmica, impulsionando a música em direção a picos emocionais vertiginosos. Vale destacar também, a influência na música do Oriente Médio e que faz da banda algo tão singular dentro do gênero.

"Hybrid"é o momento mais “pauleira” do disco. Menos progressiva, possui uma inclinação quase que inteiramente para o heavy metal, apresentando uma abordagem direta e poderosa. A seção rítmica é avassaladora, estabelecendo um groove pulsante, os riffs de guitarras são frenéticos e agressivos e o solo possui influência na música do Oriente Médio, enquanto que o teclado cria uma ótima atmosfera que complementa bem a ferocidade da peça.

Embora Binary Dream possa não apresentar uma mudança radical em relação ao disco anterior, a capacidade da banda de se destacar dentro do metal progressivo é notável. Mesmo em um cenário onde muitos – incluindo eu - argumentam está saturado, a banda consegue entregar um trabalho que se destaca pela sua singularidade e qualidade. Portanto, mesmo que Binary Dream não represente uma reinvenção do gênero, é um testemunho da habilidade e criatividade de uma banda diferenciada.

One of the band’s defining features is their ability to incorporate traditional Arabic instruments, such as the oud and kanun, into their sound. These instruments add a unique texture to their compositions, creating a sound that is both familiar and singular. The fusion of these traditional elements with the power and technique of progressive metal creates a sonic identity that is instantly recognizable.

As a metal band in the Middle East, the challenges they face are significant and multifaceted, including cultural and social restrictions, given that in many Middle Eastern countries, metal can be viewed with suspicion by authorities and parts of society. There is also a scarcity of venues for shows, as most places are reluctant to host heavy music events. They also face external pressures, such as criticism from conservative or religious fundamentalists who see metal as a negative influence. Despite all these obstacles, the band's ability to adapt and overcome adversity is truly inspiring.

Three years after Frontal, their previous album—which I consider the best progressive metal album of 2021—the band has returned to the scene with Binary Dream, their third album. The incorporation of heavy riffs gives the album a pronounced aggression, while the rhythmic complexities woven throughout the tracks demand careful attention from the listener to be fully appreciated. The mix of vocal and instrumental tracks (3 out of 9) shows a clear intention to balance lyrical expressiveness with demonstrations of instrumental virtuosity. This allows the album to capture a wider range of emotions and themes, reflecting the contrasts between introspection and explosion, as well as order and chaos.

Binary Dream is a conceptual album that explores futuristic themes and ethical reflections through the story of a robot, which gives the album its name, involved in an experiment. The story is an artistic reflection of contemporary concerns about the rise of artificial intelligence technologies and their potential impacts on society. By choosing a robot as the protagonist, the band delves into the heart of ethical issues surrounding AI: what it means to be "conscious," the nature of autonomy, and the potential for machines to transcend their original programming parameters.

I consider four tracks to be the highlights of the album—though the other five certainly have their merits as well. "Theta" features vocals that blend metal and hard rock, powerful riffs, an appropriate guitar solo, a robust rhythm section, and keyboards that permeate the piece, creating an immersive atmosphere. This track not only stands out as a powerful song within the album but also exemplifies the band's ability to weave technical complexity with emotional expression, creating a piece that is both impactful and expertly crafted.

"Manifestations" is an instrumental track that, while lacking lyrics, expresses a great deal through a technical display that serves as a true showcase of progressive metal in its purest form, demonstrating the band's ability to master and manipulate technical complexities to weave a rich and engaging sonic narrative. Fans of Dream Theater will undoubtedly feel familiar when listening to this track. "Manifestations" is built on a foundation of exceptional instrumental skills. Each member brings a unique contribution, weaving together a sonic mosaic that is both complex and unified.

"Binary Dream," the album's epic, spans over 14 minutes and contains everything one might expect from a classic example of progressive metal. From the start, it captivates the listener with an elaborate buildup that gradually unfolds, generating tension as it progresses. The vocals are impactful, the guitar riffs are powerful and intricate, alternating between moments of pure intensity and contemplative reflection, while the rhythm section provides a solid and dynamic foundation, driving the music toward dizzying emotional peaks. It's also worth highlighting the Middle Eastern musical influence, which makes the band so unique within the genre.

"Hybrid" is the album's most intense moment. Less progressive, it leans almost entirely towards heavy metal, presenting a direct and powerful approach. The rhythm section is overwhelming, establishing a pulsating groove, the guitar riffs are frantic and aggressive, and the solo is influenced by Middle Eastern music, while the keyboards create a great atmosphere that complements the ferocity of the piece.

While Binary Dream may not represent a radical departure from the previous album, the band's ability to stand out within progressive metal is remarkable. Even in a landscape where many—including myself—argue that the genre is saturated, the band manages to deliver a work that stands out for its uniqueness and quality. Therefore, even if Binary Dream does not represent a reinvention of the genre, it is a testament to the skill and creativity of a truly distinguished band.
