Após a recepção calorosa de The Snow Goose e o sucesso crescente no Reino Unido, o Camel decidiu explorar novos caminhos com Moonmadness. O álbum marca um retorno ao uso de vocais, algo que a banda havia hesitado antes, mas que ao mesmo tempo mantém uma conexão com temas conceituais, mesmo que de uma forma mais sutil. De fato, a temática de Moonmadness gira em torno dos efeitos da Lua sobre a experiência humana e como revelado no encarte da remasterização de 2009, cada membro da banda é representado em uma das faixas do álbum.
O disco se abre com "Aristillus", uma faixa breve que estabelece o tom para a jornada musical que se segue. Com uma introdução cativante, repleta de melodias de sintetizadores e uma sensação de marcha, a música serve como uma brilhante introdução ao universo de Moonmadness, oferecendo um vislumbre do que está por vir. "Song Within A Song" inicia de maneira suave e evolui para uma sonoridade celestial, com a flauta em destaque interagindo de forma dramática e ao mesmo tempo lúdica com os teclados.
