Em se tratando de século XXI, a Big Big Train tem sido, sem dúvida alguma, um dos principais nomes no mundo do rock progressivo mundial, lançando discos de extrema qualidade que a alavancaram a outro patamar. Eles realmente têm um som muito acessível e que responde aos desejos principalmente dos fãs principalmente de Genesis da era Peter Gabriel, que sempre gostaram de imaginar o que seria da banda se Phil Collins nunca tivesse assumido a liderança e a levado a um som mais calcado no pop dos anos 80.

A cada lançamento, a banda tem se tornado mais sólida no cenário mundial, conseguindo o que raras bandas, principalmente dessa geração, conseguem: definir sua própria direção e som, construindo uma atmosfera única e um universo sonoro deslumbrante. A musicalidade é sempre impressionante, demonstrando que o tempo, longevidade e um forte grupo colaborativo com a mesma ambição têm o poder de fazer com que a banda evolua ilimitadamente.

Grimspound abre com “Brave Captain”, um épico baseado em Albert Ball, um dos principais pilotos de caça inglês durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial. Traz uma introdução que pavimenta um clima atmosférico e assombroso antes da inclusão de todos os instrumentos, mostrando a cadência principal da canção. A música possui toques encantadores de flauta e violino, com David Longdon desempenhando um vocal muito expressivo e emotivo. A segunda faixa é a instrumental "On the Racing Line". Carrega consigo uma influência de jazz/fusion, algo inclusive novo em se tratando do grupo. Nick D'Virgilio mostra aqui porque pode ser considerado tranquilamente um dos melhores bateristas do mundo. Uma música linda.

“Experimental Gentlemen”, a introdução é suave e pastoral, dando ao ouvinte uma sensação de devaneio por meio de uma bateria serena que regimenta a canção, enquanto um belo trabalho de piano e flauta dão o tom da peça. Possui uma guitarra de toque brilhantemente evocativo e descritivo. Por vezes, o violino de Rachel Hall ocupa o centro da música, auxiliado e encorajado por um teclado emotivo que dá a sensação afetiva ao trabalho. A faixa também conta com um lindo solo de guitarra que atrai a atenção antes que a calmaria e reflexão se assentem sobre uma seção de piano, onde o som sutil do baixo de Greg Spawton se junta à bateria de Nick D'Virgilio e a uma guitarra que assombra a música até seu fim.

Em "Meadowland", o ouvinte é apresentado a um lugar onde as pessoas se reúnem para compartilhar seus pensamentos sobre as coisas que amam. Em “The Ivy Gate”, David Longdon tem a parceria de Judy Dyble, fundadora da banda de folk Fairport Convention. A fusão deu bastante certo, mostrando um folk elegante e um rock progressivo mais pastoral. A introdução é através de um banjo atmosférico. A voz de Judy acrescenta drama e suspense à música e uma aura misteriosa envolve a canção, somada com grandes sequências de violino. Também possui uma erupção liderada por um baixo dinâmico, dando mais força ao conjunto da obra. No fim, pode-se dizer que se trata de uma declaração musical extremamente poderosa.

Com mais de quinze minutos, “A Mead Hall In Winter” é a música mais longa do álbum. Uma peça bastante imersiva que parece pedir para que o ouvinte se envolva plenamente. Neste momento, David Longdon não é apenas o vocalista, mas um trovador apropriado, contando histórias através dos tempos. Possui um coro cativante e viciante, os vocais harmonizados são assombrosamente memoráveis e os pequenos fragmentos de violino e guitarra são a cola que brilhantemente segura todos os outros instrumentos juntos em uma perfeita engrenagem. Há uma seção instrumental fascinante no meio. Vocais e instrumentais entrelaçam-se e se combinam em uma entrega musical intrincada, mas ao mesmo tempo acessível. Um trabalho soberbo de órgão também merece menção, assim como a investida de violino. Quinze minutos de prazer sonoro que chega ao fim com vocais sedutores sobre uma música apaixonante ressoando aos ouvidos. Sensacional.

O álbum finaliza com “As The Crow Flies”, provavelmente a faixa mais pessoal e melancólica. Possui um timbre profundo e uma abertura com ar sombrio. O trabalho de guitarra é exemplar, como se o instrumento estivesse falando com o ouvinte. O momento em que a voz delicada de Rachel Hall se junta à música é de uma graça etérea e acrescenta esperança e desejo de levantar o sentimento de perda que pairava sobre tudo. A natureza sentimental da música deixa uma grande marca no coração e alma de quem entende e sente a sua mensagem, finalizando o álbum de uma forma que não poderia ser melhor.

Em última análise, Grimspound é um disco muito lindo de uma das bandas mais reverenciadas atualmente do rock progressivo. Apresentaram novamente canções que ratificam mais uma vez o porquê de terem a reputação que carregam. Não se trata apenas de músicas, mas de histórias, sejam factuais ou ficcionais, entregando um espetáculo profundamente envolvente e fascinante. Um belíssimo “castelo de areia” que uma maré jamais levará.

With each release, the band has become more solid on the world stage, achieving what few bands, especially from this generation, manage: defining their own direction and sound, creating a unique atmosphere and a stunning sonic universe. Their musicianship is always impressive, demonstrating that time, longevity, and a strong collaborative group with the same ambition have the power to make the band evolve endlessly.

Grimspound opens with “Brave Captain”, an epic based on Albert Ball, one of the top English fighter pilots of World War I. It starts with an introduction that sets an atmospheric and haunting mood before the inclusion of all instruments, showcasing the main cadence of the song. The track features charming touches of flute and violin, with David Longdon delivering a very expressive and emotional vocal performance. The second track is the instrumental "On the Racing Line." It carries a jazz/fusion influence, something new for the group. Nick D'Virgilio demonstrates why he is considered one of the best drummers in the world. It is a beautiful piece.
