Camel - Mirage (1974)

Camel é uma banda cuja discografia é notavelmente homogênea, com álbuns que mantêm um alto padrão de qualidade e consistência. Entre esses, Mirage se destaca como uma demonstração máxima do talento coletivo dos membros da banda. Com sua formação clássica em plena forma, o grupo atinge aqui um ápice criativo que é até hoje celebrado por fãs e críticos do rock progressivo.

A capa de Mirage também merece destaque, pois gerou bastante polêmica na época de seu lançamento. Inspirada no design do maço de cigarro  homônimos, a arte foi fruto de um acordo comercial entre a banda e a marca Camel. O uso desse visual causou alvoroço, com muitos acusando a banda de fazer apologia ao fumo. No entanto, a controvérsia não teve grandes consequências, e Mirage seguiu adiante com sua capa única e memorável, que hoje é vista como um ícone visual da discografia da banda.

O álbum abre com "Freefall", uma faixa que carrega uma forte veia psicodélica, muito em parte graças à influência do tecladista Peter Bardens, o autor da canção. Embora “Freefall” possa não ser a peça mais impressionante do álbum, ela ainda apresenta um trabalho notável, especialmente nas guitarras e no órgão, que demonstram a habilidade técnica e a coesão da banda. "Supertwister" é uma joia instrumental e a menor faixa do álbum, mas não se deixe enganar pelo seu tamanho. A beleza desta peça está em sua simplicidade e na forma como Andy Latimer, além de mostrar seu talento na guitarra, revela-se um exímio flautista. Esta faixa é um exemplo clássico da escola Camel de rock progressivo: relaxante, serena e incrivelmente bem construída, encapsulando a essência do som da banda.

"Nimrodel / The Procession / The White Rider" é sem dúvida um dos pontos altos de Mirage. Baseada na obra O Senhor dos Anéis, a faixa é uma jornada épica que começa com toques profundos de guitarra, acompanhados por sintetizadores sombrios. A introdução leva a uma passagem com flauta dançante, alinhada a uma marcha militar marcada por tambores. O que se segue é uma melodia vocal incrivelmente bela – algo raro em se tratando de Camel, já que as melodias vocais da banda nem sempre são o destaque em suas músicas. Mas aqui, elas brilham. Além disso, a faixa contém um dos solos de teclado mais emocionantes da história do rock progressivo, um momento de pura maestria de Bardens que, simplesmente, arrebata o ouvinte. A canção transita habilmente entre momentos agressivos e suaves, jamais perdendo seu foco ou intensidade.

"Earthrise" é outra faixa instrumental que merece todos os elogios. É uma composição extraordinariamente empolgante, onde cada instrumento soa enérgico e vibrante. Apesar de Latimer e Bardens muitas vezes receberem a maior parte dos elogios, aqui eu gostaria de destacar a seção rítmica da banda – o baixo de Doug Ferguson e a bateria de Andy Ward. Juntos, eles criam uma base rítmica poderosa que sustenta toda a energia da faixa e a eleva a outro nível.

Encerrar um álbum com chave de ouro é algo que o Camel faz com perfeição em "Lady Fantasy". A faixa começa de forma explosiva, com teclados extraordinários e acordes de guitarra que já prenunciam a grandiosidade que está por vir. A partir daí, a maré abaixa, e a música se torna mais cadenciada e tranquila, liderada pela guitarra de Latimer e pelos teclados atmosféricos de Bardens. Os vocais suaves contribuem para essa atmosfera, com Latimer e Bardens alternando brincadeiras melódicas entre a guitarra e o teclado, quase como em um duelo de blues. Ferguson e Ward também merecem destaque com suas linhas de baixo e bateria impecáveis que sustentam a faixa. O final da música é um momento apoteótico – uma melodia suave guiada por slide guitar, pratos marcantes, baixo pulsante e atmosfera envolvente do teclado. Quando Latimer retorna com os vocais, a instrumentação gradualmente ganha força até culminar em uma explosão de energia. Bardens, mais uma vez, entrega um solo de teclado fenomenal, consolidando seu status como um dos tecladistas mais influentes da história do rock progressivo.

Mirage é, como mencionado, o ápice criativo do Camel em sua melhor formação. Um disco sensacional que transcende as fronteiras do gênero e merece ser ouvido por todos, não apenas pelos fãs de prog rock. Infelizmente, embora a banda ainda esteja em atividade, a possibilidade de ver essa formação em ação é impossível, devido ao falecimento do genial Peter Bardens em janeiro de 2002. No entanto, a obra que ele ajudou a criar é atemporal e está disponível para quem quiser desfrutar.

The cover of Mirage also deserves attention, as it generated quite a bit of controversy at the time of its release. Inspired by the design of the eponymous cigarette pack, the artwork was the result of a commercial agreement between the band and the Camel brand. The use of this visual caused an uproar, with many accusing the band of promoting smoking. However, the controversy did not have significant consequences, and Mirage moved forward with its unique and memorable cover, which is now seen as a visual icon in the band's discography.

The album opens with "Freefall", a track that carries a strong psychedelic vein, largely thanks to the influence of keyboardist Peter Bardens, who wrote the song. "Nimrodel / The Procession / The White Rider" is undoubtedly one of the highlights of Mirage. Based on The Lord of the Rings, the track is an epic journey that begins with deep guitar tones, accompanied by dark synthesizers. The introduction leads to a passage with a dancing flute, aligned with a military march marked by drums. What follows is an incredibly beautiful vocal melody—something rare for Camel, as the band's vocal melodies are not always the highlight of their music. But here, they shine. Additionally, the track contains one of the most exciting keyboard solos in the history of progressive rock, a moment of pure mastery from Bardens that simply enthralls the listener. The song skillfully transitions between aggressive and gentle moments, never losing its focus or intensity.

"Earthrise" is another instrumental track that deserves all the praise. It is an extraordinarily exciting composition where each instrument sounds energetic and vibrant. Although Latimer and Bardens often receive the lion's share of the accolades, I would like to highlight the band's rhythm section here—Doug Ferguson's bass and Andy Ward's drums. Together, they create a powerful rhythmic foundation that supports the entire energy of the track and elevates it to another level.

Closing an album on a high note is something Camel does perfectly with "Lady Fantasy". The track begins explosively, with extraordinary keyboards and guitar chords that already hint at the grandeur to come. From there, the tide ebbs, and the music becomes more measured and calm, led by Latimer's guitar and Bardens' atmospheric keyboards. The soft vocals contribute to this atmosphere, with Latimer and Bardens alternating melodic play between guitar and keyboard, almost like a blues duel. Ferguson and Ward also deserve praise for their impeccable bass and drum lines that support the track. The end of the song is an apotheotic moment—a gentle melody guided by slide guitar, striking cymbals, pulsating bass, and the enveloping atmosphere of the keyboard. When Latimer returns with the vocals, the instrumentation gradually gains strength until it culminates in an explosion of energy. Bardens, once again, delivers a phenomenal keyboard solo, cementing his status as one of the most influential keyboardists in progressive rock history.

Mirage is, as mentioned, the creative peak of Camel in their best formation. A sensational album that transcends the boundaries of the genre and deserves to be heard by everyone, not just prog rock fans. Unfortunately, although the band is still active, the possibility of seeing this lineup in action is impossible due to the death of the brilliant Peter Bardens in January 2002. However, the work he helped create is timeless and available for anyone to enjoy.
